Instead of running 5k (or the plethora of sports choices)did intervals as such:

3 rds of
800m
400m
200m
2x100m

Rest equal to work in between. yes, that means that after running the second 100m, you have only a few seconds until your next 800m.

Rd 1
800m - 3:19
400m - 1:32
200m - :45
100m - :20, :19

Rd 2:
800m - 3:27
400m - 1:37
200m - :47
100m - :20,:17

Rd 3:
800m - 3:33
400m - 1:41
200m - :49
100m - :21, :20

Did 4 x 1 mile intervals on the bike...not fun and I am not fast.
